Framing a Poster at Home – Tips and Sizes

You can quickly and affordably hang a poster on the wall with sticky tack or double-sided tape – you don't have to buy a frame. However, a frame instantly makes a poster look like a finished piece of art, protects it, and helps it fit into the rest of the decor.

Framing a poster at home is usually very easy. Most often, you just choose a ready-made frame that fits the size of the poster, place the poster in it, and hang it on the wall.

Finding a poster frame is easy

The most common sizes for Kulttijuliste's posters are maxi and A1.

• Maxi poster 61.5 × 91.5 cm – frames are often sold as 60 × 90 cm. In many frames, the poster fits directly into place.
• A1 poster 59.4 × 84.1 cm – a standard A1 frame is an easy and functional choice for it.

If a maxi poster is just slightly too large for a 60 × 90 cm frame, it's not a difficult issue: you can trim about a centimeter off the sides. A ruler and scissors will get you started, or you can get a cleaner edge with a utility knife against a straight plank or ruler. Cut a small amount at a time to keep the result neat.

Good-looking poster frames can often be found on sale for about 10–15 euros at places like IKEA, JYSK, and other interior design stores. A black frame is a safe choice for music, movie, and game posters. A white or wood-colored frame creates a softer and more decorative look.

Ready-made frame or custom frame?

A ready-made frame is the quickest and most affordable way for most people to get a poster on the wall. A custom frame is worthwhile when you want a very specific shade, a passe-partout, or a particularly finished result.

Do you want the poster pre-framed? Although there isn't a direct "framed poster" option available in the online store at the moment, we can do the framing for you upon request. This is great, for example, when you are looking for a Stray Kids poster, a framed band poster, a movie poster, or a ready-made gift for the wall.

A framed poster will be delivered as a ready-made piece of art. Since a frame makes the shipment larger and more fragile to transport, packaging and shipping costs will be higher than for a regular poster tube. A small labor fee will also be charged for the framing, and shipping may be delayed by about a couple of days. Glass or plexiglass?

Glass is clear and quite resistant to scratching, but it is heavier and can break. Plexiglass (acrylic sheet) is lighter and safer, for example, in a child's room, but it scratches more easily. Both work well in a standard poster frame. Avoid continuous direct sunlight to keep the colors vibrant for as long as possible.

Hang the poster at the right height

A good starting point is to hang the poster so that its center is roughly at eye level, often about 145–155 cm from the floor. Above a sofa, bed, or dresser, a poster usually looks balanced when its bottom edge is about 15–20 cm above the top edge of the furniture.

Create a neat poster wall from several posters

Multiple posters on the same wall look best when there is some unifying idea: the same frame color, the same theme, or a common color palette. Leave about 5–8 cm between frames and try arranging them on the floor first. Even movie, music, and game posters can form a stylish ensemble when the frames are similar.
